Uvalde Run

JR and I went to town last night. As usual, stopped by Ruby's for a drink and he played some pool with the local shark. We thought we'd get a burger so found a Jack in the Box -- and it was freezing inside -- they had the a/c on and said it was automatic so they couldn't change it. We ate in the truck. Wallyworld for supplies and then home.

The Jack in the Box receipt had a survey number to call, so I did and got a chance to complain.

Next weekend will be much more exciting. We're going to Waco to stay with a friend of his and go country dancing at least two night. Am looking forward to it and will report fully.

Other than that, life is quiet. Store reorganization is coming along. Weather is being nice. Start for home in one month.

Weather

We finally got some, that is. Yesterday and today, it's dripping rain, lots of fog over the hills, no sun, not cold. It's supposed to drop 20 deg. today from 65 in the am to 45 in the pm with maybe thunderstorms. The region is desperate for rain, so it's a good thing. And it may wash all the pollen from the air so I won't be allergic for a while.

Other than that, life is fairly routine. JR and I went to town Sat. pm, played a little pool at Ruby's Lounge (they only have two tables), went to WM, came home. So exciting.

Am trying to pin Betty down to get answers and decisions so I can continue on reorganizing the store. Some of the things JR and I want to do are not the "way I've always done it," so it may take awhile to bring her around. Or it may not happen at all. We'll see.

Have been using Hulu.com to see some TV shows, esp. Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?. Also watch Countdown with Keith Olbermann. So that's my TV. Makes a nice change from reading and crosswords.

Tha-a-a-at's all, folks!

To Fist or to Saddleback or Both?

I was poking around on BoingBoing and found a report on a Fox News so-called "sex expert" who said that the Obamas enjoy fisting.

Now, before your eyes totally bug out, what she meant was that they do fist bumps a lot. Seems the so-called sex expert doesn't know what "fisting" really means.

So, in the responses someone said, at least they're not saddlebacking. New term to me, so I whip over to the Urban Dictionary to get educated.

Seems that saddlebacking means having unprotected anal sex (that is, no condom), and it was named that because the evangelist Rick Warren, of Saddleback Church, opposes both premarital sex and contraception. So Christian teenagers have decided that anal sex isn't really sex, so they can "save themselves" for marriage and remain "virgins" by saddlebacking as much as they like.

Rationalization is a wonderful thing, god wot.

Keys to the World

We've handed the keys to our world to a new face, a different face. Of course, it is a lawyer's face, so we have to be watchful. But -- welcome to the 21st century, America. It's past time to move on. And we hope our new president will help us move up, as well.

Speaking of keys (neat segue, what?), I was handed the job (and the box) of finding out what all the 100s of miscellaneous keys lying around the campground actually unlock. Let's see: there's the store with two doors, the ice chest, the filing cabinets, nine cabins in the main campground, a house with two doors and an annex and double garage, breaker boxes, bathrooms, laundry, barn, toolshed. The Cliff 7 campground has at least two cabins and a house, the river gate, more breaker boxes. And who knows what all else.

Some cabins have deadbolts, some don't. For the big house, I found keys that work in the front doorknob (but not the deadbolt) and in the back door deadbolt (but not the knob). I've found three unofficial keys that open three different cabins (one key open all 3, one key opens 2, and one open one)

And, you know, keys are dirty. Say it with me: It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it.

There. We all feel better now, right?

The Eagle Shat?

JR and I headed off to swinging Uvalde again this evening. We were to celebrate his birthday and he'd buy me dinner in return for the surgical excursion to San Antonio last week. We went first to Ruby's, the little dive we stopped at last week. Tonight it was full of people, unlike last week when there only about 5 people in the place). There was a huge soup pot of menudo (not for me, thanks). Talked to Phil, a heavy equipment operator in the oil fields; a guy who had brought his own double-size bottle of Seagram's 7; another guy who shuddered at the idea of menudo. I'll talk to almost anybody, you know.

At one point, a pool player guy wandered up to the bar where we were, and he and I made eye contact. He said, "want a drink?" I just shook my head as he was obviously drunk already. He went away.

On to Lunker's Grill, where JR once again had the ribeye steak and I chose the 16 oz t-bone. I brought home about a third of it. Good seasoning and mesquite smoked -- yum. I bought the drinks as JR's birthday present. Once again, the joint was jumping, unlike last week. We figured it must be payday weekend (hence the title of this post).

Then off to Walmart for a few supplies and then started home. Dense but patchy fog on the way. Supposed to be up to mid-70s tomorrow and sunny.

Passings

Today, Ricardo Montalban, suave and debonair, left us.

Also, the writer George Chesbro, whom most of you have probably never heard of, died in November 08. I just found his obituary on the UK Guardian site. I loved his books, but as they say, they are an acquired taste. The best-known novels featured a man named Mongo, a university professor, black belt in karate, who was once a circus performer known as Mongo the Magnificent. Oh, did I mention he's a dwarf? Sly humor, satire, weird blend of whimsy and science fiction, noir -- oh, a little bit of everything. They never sold very well and often were out of print (he was dropped by two publishers). According to the obit, he and his third wife set up a small publishing company to bring his works back to print. If you see one, give it a try; you might like it. I did and do.

Long Day (with Surgery)

My fellow workamper, J.R., had to have knee surgery today, so we left here at 7am to drive to San Antonio. His appointment was for 10.30 with surgery scheduled for 12 and be on the way back home about 3pm. I dropped him off about 10 and went off to spend money on, what else, books. Got back to the facility about 12.30 (with a bag of books) and settled in to wait. I only got 4 hrs sleep so took a small nap of about 20 minutes, not enough. Read a book. Drank a coke. Ate a croissant picked up at an Alsatian bakery in Hondo. Read two magazines. He'd left his cellphone and about 1pm it rang.

It was the nurse informing me that the surgery had been delayed until 3pm and he'd be ready to go about 4.30. Seems he'd had a half-cup of coffee, a major no-no. We finally got back here about 7.45pm, by which time I was hungry, thirsty, and sleepy. I'm also reacting to cedar tree pollen in the area, so I have itchy eyes and drippy nose. Boring.

JR is going to take me out for a steak dinner next weekend in thanks. It's also his birthday next Sunday, so we'll celebrate that too.

Seven Bluff Cabins/RV Park

These first two pics are the orchard setting and some of the cabins. County Road 348 (River Road) makes a loop. The pic on the right is the southern end, farthest from where we are. The pic on the left below is about 100 feet from where I'm staying and it may look like the river, but the road runs right through it. Notice the stick in the middle? That tells you how deep the water is.

An Outing

JR and I went to whoop it up in Uvalde this evening. Of course, it's 10.30 and we're home so that'll tell you how much whoopee we created. Liquor laws are so wierd. There's lots of what I would call "taverns" where you can get beer and wine and bring your own booze and buy set-ups (the way it was in Asheville in the 1960s). Here, these places are called lounges. Then there are the private clubs, with a membership fee, where you can get mixed drinks.

Anyhow, we stopped at a little lounge JR had found and liked so he could have a beer. They didn't have ginger ale so I had a coke. JR said, I thought you liked wine. Yes, I said, but only with food. Never mind the dissertation on wines that can be drunk by themselves; they're certainly not going to be found at Ruby's Lounge in Uvalde Texas.

Then off to a club he'd joined, which is part of a motel/restaurant. It has an odd name but I've forgotten it already. Sports bar type place with three big-screen TVs, loud music playing at the same time, and so dark he had to get out his lighter so we could read the menus. He had a ribeye, nice and thick, and I had shrimp stuffed with crab and cheese. All good.

Then off to Walmart for provisions to bring home. I especially wanted to find those clothes storage bags that expel the air as you roll them up; no need for a vacuum. They didn't have any. Then I was looking for a Britta filter -- looked in grocery with the water, looked in housewares with coffee tea pitchers food storage etc etc. Not there. Tired and frustrated, I went through three people before finding the one who knew where they were -- in Hardware.

We headed back, yawning all the way. But it was nice to get out.

Reorganizing

the campground store, that is. I told Betty we needed to have a planning session about how to reorganize the store. She said, I'm really bad at that; just do whatever you want.

Well, oookkkaaayy, I said. And proceeded to do just that. It's not a big store but it sure is messy. Nothing was done at the end of the season so everything is still hanging around. Literally. There's lots of clothing that needs to be gone through before new inventory is ordered. There's $200 sunglasses. There's little kids arm floats. And everything in between.

So everything is in upheaval right now, including the fixtures, which I'm rearranging as well.

And, nothing is computerized so there's no running inventory and no way to tell what has or hasn't sold. I've offered to set up an Excel speadsheet to do some tracking. She said others have done that but she doesn't use them. No sense setting it up unless it'll get used.

JR and I went on an errand to the "big city" of Leakey, about 15 miles north, to get some supplies. There's lots of these river area camps along the way. The town itself is about a mile long and 1/4 mile wide, but it has two hardware stores (both were out of one of the things we were supposed to get); two restaurants, an art gallery etc etc. JR says it rolls up the sidewalks about 8pm. There are two motorcycle repair shops as the area gets large amounts of bikers; both shops also have beer/wine cafes (yeah, Jeb, let's stop in here and get our bike fixed and have a few for the road).

Oh the horror

I'm essentially without TV for the next two months. Will I survive?

Of course. I just won't be happy. Maybe I'll drag out my decoupage stuff and actually do something (gasp) creative.

JR has a satellite dish but nobody seems to know how to split the signal. He thinks you have to have the box from Direct TV and even then I'd only get whatever he's watching. Surely there's a way to do it. I mean, houses only have one dish but multiple TVs and users who don't all watch the same channel.

I can go over to his rig to watch CSI. Yah. And I can go over to Cabin 6 to watch anytime I want, but it's not the same as sitting in my own rig, channel tagging whenever I'm bored.

Settling In

Saturday I went to the campground store with Betty, the owner, who talks a mile a minute and answers the phone and jumps from topic to topic. My job while here is mostly to help her get the store organized and ready for the season. I'll also be learning the reservation system on the computer. For some reason, her inventory isn't computerized so I may volunteer to set up an excel spreadsheet for her.

JR showed up today from his new year vacation. He wrenched his bad knee so he's heading off early tomorrow to see a doctor. I last saw him on 14 September when I left the Madison PA KOA campground. His dog Waco went nuts to see me (of course, he goes nuts around everybody).

We went on a golf-cart tour so JR could do some chores, shoo the pet chickens into their roost, talk to the herds of whitetail and axis deer that show up to the automatic deer corn feeders, feed the dogs at the big house, and the multitudes of cats that live out and around all over the property. One stays in the store and is very friendly. I may get a little cash taking care of the 10 indoor cats when the owners go away. Good thing I like cats, right?

Turned cold today, high of 45, but should go up about 20 deg. tomorrow. Hooray.

Books Read Dec 2008

I've streamlined the data so you might actually look at some of these books, now.

Author (*=perm.lib.) / Title / Comments
• Armstrong, Kelley / Personal Demon / Women of the Otherworld series. Getting boring.
• Banks, L.A. / Bite the Bullet / Crimson Moon series. Just don't like her writing style. Overwrought.
• Barclay, Linwood / No Time for Goodbye / slow-paced; too much "family" story for me."
• Bentley, Jennie / Fatal Fixer-upper / yet another home repair series but not bad, reasonably interesting characters and plot.
• Brockmann, Suzanne / All Through the Night / Very romantic, few thriller-like things.
• ----- / Force of Nature / / yes, I bought it again, and reread it, too (mostly).
• ----- / Heart Throb / an early work but showing progress.
• Garwood, Julie / Murder List / so boring I have nothing to say about it either.
• Goldin* & Mason / Jade D'Arcy books 1 & 2 / perm. lib. books re-read
• Graham, Heather / Deadly Harvest / Flynn Bros. trilogy. Too much of the same old same old.
• Hart, John / Down River / won the Edgar. Set in Salisbury NC, interesting but slow, telegraphs clues and plot twists.
• Heinlein* Robert / Starship Trooper / perm. lib. book re-read
• Hendee, Barb & J.C. / Dhampir / good effort but a little overwrought, and obviously being set up to be a series.
• Hoag, Tami / Thin Dark Line / decent plot, good characters, draggy. Paper is bad quality.
• Hooper, Kay / Sense of Evil / Not bad, may look for others in this series.
• Iles, Greg / Blood Memory / his female heroine is unbelievable, as is the "repressed memory" plotline.
• -----Dead Sleep / woman protagonist; present tense; done well.
• ----- / Turning Angel / good comments on race relations in Natchez; some gaping holes in plot and killer seems like a subplot to hero's inner journey.
• Jackson, Lisa / Absolute Fear / nicely convoluted plot but heroine turns out not to be main character, at least in my opinion; disconcerting.
• Merrill, Robin / Some Like It Red Hot / Red hat women & RVs, set in Vegas. Hot sex gets in way of RV life & mystery. I mean, it's almost like two different authors were writing: one for the RV life and the murder mystery, and one for the hot sex. Makes the book whipsaw.
• Michaels, Fern / Fast Track / Sisterhood novel. Silliest thing I've ever read; shades of Charlie's Angels. How can people like this writer? So silly it's insulting.
• Neggers, Carla / Cold Pursuit / decently written even if formulaic.
• Paretsky, Sara / Bleeding Kansas / author of V.I. Warshawski mysteries; tried to read this while in Kansas but, while well-written, didn't like the people or the situation.
• Purser, Ann / Murder on Monday / British cozy; very British, full of family life; interesting concept, though.
• Rule, Ann / Mortal Danger / true crime and horrifying, as usual.
• Walker, Blair S. / Don't Believe Your Lying Eyes / black Baltimore reporter. Interesting to get a different perspective but draggy.

Rotated View

Okay, here it is. Feel free to turn yourself or your computer sideways. I don't know why it's doing this; it looks fine on the Preview. More later.

Friday, January 2, 2009

This is my campsite, with JR's 5th wheel just beyond me. He'll be back at the end of the week. I had a really nice pic of the view out my window but the uploader persists in rotating it a half turn, and I can't figure out how to make it quit doing that.

New Site

I left Port Lavaca around 10am and traveled back roads to San Antonio, where I had to get on the 410 beltway (I was heading for a Barnes & Noble). Naturally, I promptly went too far and had to circle around and come back right through downtown on the freeway. Ick. Finally found a B&N on the outer beltway. After a satisfactory splurge, got on US 90 west to Uvalde. Spent the night in the Walmart parking lot. Had treated myself to dinner at Applebee's, right across the street. Was only fair and didn't finish it.

This am went into WM and finished stocking up. Then went down the road and found a propane place to top off my tank (last got propane in July 08 and still only needed 1.4 gal.). Then north on TX 83 to Concan (not much there) and pulled into Seven Bluffs Cabins/RV Parks about 11.30.

Am now set up on my site, all connected (as you can tell by this post, I have internet service). No cellphone service if you're not AT&T. A landline will be run when JR gets back, which he and I will share. As to TV, he's got his satellite dish out but we don't know how to share it. I'm going to set up for antenna use and see what I get, if anything.

It was cool, foggy, and misty this morning, but it's burned off now (2pm) and is sunny and calm. I'll start work tomorrow (20 hrs a week). Looks like a nice place to settle for the next two months. I'll take pictures soon.

A New Year

Arbitrarily, of course; after all, it's just a label. However, I wish everybody has a great year and all their dreams and fantasies and wishes come true. Mine, too.

I don't know when I'll post again as I'm traveling today and tomorrow and don't know how well the set-up at the Seven Bluffs Campground will work.

See you soon.
